If an employee is harassed at work with regard to their religion or belief, the employer is fully liable, even though they are completely opposed to such acts.

Acts of discrimination at a work related social gathering, require an employment tribunal to consider whether the circumstances are an extension of the employment.

An organisations may be liable and may be ordered to pay compensation unless it can show that it really had taken reasonable steps to prevent harassment – for example, through the content of its company policies and supporting induction, training and development programmes.

Employers should also, wherever possible protect their workers from harassment by third parties such as service users and customers.
